Review of the Philips 65OLED937: a beautiful TV sublimated by the Ambilight

Home-Cinema and gaming, we are not bad, there

We tested the Philips 65OLED937 TV succeeding last year’s Philips 65OLED936. It represents the high-end at the manufacturer and has an OLED panel promising an optimal peak brightness. Compatible with all dynamic HDR video and Dolby Atmos and DTS audio formats, it is equipped with a Bowers & Wilkins soundbar serving as a stand to keep the Ultra HD screen equipped with the new generation Ambilight ambient lighting system. Is this 2022 version worth it? Here is our opinion.

Philips 65OLED937

The Philips OLED937 TV represents the ultimate know-how of the brand in 2023. For this, it relies on a panel manufactured by LG Display on which are applied different Philips treatments to optimize the brightness and details of the image. The idea is to obtain the strongest brightness while offering colors as faithful as possible, Not to mention the production of natural effects and embedded technologies to seduce even the most demanding players. For this, there are several HDMI 2.1 inputs compatible with optimization technologies for video games and a delay time to the display as small as possible.

The Philips OLED937 series tested here is available in 65 or 77 inches. Here’s our review of the 65-inch Philips 65OLED937.

DESIGN: WE TAKE THE SAME, BUT WITH MORE FABRIC ON THE SOUNDBAR

The design of the Philips 65OLED937 TV is very similar, if not identical, to last year’s OLED936 series. We are therefore entitled to some of the most qualitative materials, including an extremely thin aluminum frame.

It comes with a soundbar, just like the TCL 65X10 TV. The bar is to be installed on the base on TV. To do this, Philips provides two supports. The first is to be used to place the TV on a piece of furniture and the second is used in case of wall installation. You have to pass a cable between the bowels of the bracket and plug it into a proprietary connector. The soundbar thus serves as a foot to the screen which is thus perfectly maintained.

Last year’s metal grille gives way to a fabric coating on the front and on top of the soundbar. No visual discomfort is to be deplored, the image reflecting extremely little on the upper part of the soundbar. This one is always slightly beveled forward on its façade. In the center, we find the famous eye-shaped tweeter-on-top, trademark of Bowers & Wilkins, audio partner of Philips for a few years now.

Count on a width of 108 cm for the bar which allows to place the television on a piece of furniture that is not extremely wide. The depth is 26 cm. The TV itself, offers a thickness of 5 cm at its base, where all the electronic part is located. At its thinnest point, at the very top, count on an incredible thinness of only 4 mm. The “Whaou” effect is there. Installed on its base which serves as a soundbar, the screen is raised by about 10 cm. The stand does not allow to rotate the screen, a feature that is not so common, only available on a few models including the Philips OLED807, some Hisense models and Panasonic or Loewe, for example.

On the back, the only available wire guide is offered at the stand that links the screen to the soundbar. This makes it possible to concentrate all the cables in order to organize their escape backwards, invisible when sitting in front of the TV. As on the previous model, note that Philips provides an L-shaped plastic plate to cover the two poles of connectors to obtain a perfectly organized back

CONNECTIONS

As most of the time, the connectors are placed on the right side of the TV when viewed from behind. They are divided into two poles. As on the previous model, there are two HDMI 2.1 inputs, two other HDMI 2.0b inputs, an Antenna jack, a Satellite jack, an Ethernet port, a digital optical output and an output for a subwoofer. There are also three USB sockets and a headphone jack. There are also three USB sockets and a headphone jack. The TV supports Wi-Fi 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) and Bluetooth.

On the 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs, two of them support Ultra HD signals at 120 frames per second. These are also compatible with VRR and ALLM technologies to, respectively, limit image tearing and reduce display delay time to a minimum. We can also count on compatibility with FreeSync Premium standards for Xbox/PS5 consoles and G-Sync for gaming computers.

AMBILIGHT, EVEN MORE PRECISION

Like the previous series, this one also benefits from the exclusive Ambilight system on all four sides. Behind the TV, you can see the different LEDs that light up to harmonize with the image displayed on the screen or in other modes. The system can follow images, only audio or remain fixed in order to embrace the colors of a country’s flag, during the broadcast of a sporting event, for example. Compared to last year, the color diodes are now managed independently of each other and no longer by zones, which allows for more precise and relevant lighting.

In all objectivity, we would have to have a model from last year and this year side by side to see the differences, but let’s say that we could still see that the colors were slightly more impactful and relevant. With the Ambilight, the atmosphere is much more immersive and really allows you to extend the image on the walls all around the screen. When you have tasted it, it is extremely difficult to go back, the other TVs seem bland next door.

A BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECTLY CONTRASTED IMAGE THAT CAN EVEN BE ENHANCED

The Philips 65OLED937 TV is equipped with a 10-bit 100/120 Hz White-OLED panel displaying Ultra HD definition (3840 x 2160 pixels). This is a panel provided by LG Display called OLED+ at Philips.

The Philip 65OLED937 promises a higher brightness peak, but is organized like a classic OLED panel in terms of its subpixels. To produce high brightness, the TV is equipped with a heat sink to evacuate heat.

It takes advantage of the sixth generation of the Philips P5 AI processor for image processing, taking care of scaling non-UHD content. This function is extremely effective, providing a very high level of detail for shows, movies and series that are not adapted to the best definition. The chipset also supports the brightness sensor installed on the front of the screen to adapt the brightness of the screen according to the lighting conditions of the room (eye protection function). As on all OLED TVs, the viewing angles are very wide. However, they are still less extensive than the viewing angles offered by the Sony A95K and Samsung S95B models using a QD-OLED panel manufactured by Samsung Display.

The compensations for movements proposed here are of a very high level. The scrolls are perfect, suffering from no remanence defects. The camcorder effects that could be blamed on previous generations are no more. The image looks much more natural. The contrast can be considered infinite here offering perfect blacks in dark scenes and no blooming effect is to be deplored here, which represents a significant strength of OLED panels. This is particularly visible during the night scenes of the documentary Earth: The Night, broadcast on Netflix where the Moon appears very bright without any artifact and with perfect contours.

On the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power broadcast on Prime Video, the image is extremely realistic and natural with perfectly fluid movements sometimes giving the impression of being closer to the actors. Without being really annoying, the overall rendering shows scenes that seem slightly too hot, which we will check with the measurements below.

Home Theater mode is an image processing orchestrated by the processor that allows to obtain a better definition than the other modes by strengthening the sharpness as well as the details of the image. We can thus seriously restore the broadcast of the House Of The Dragon series on OCS, which is unfortunately only offered in HD quality (and which would have largely deserved the possibility of viewing in Ultra HD).

GAMING: A BAR FOR SETTINGS

For a few years now, the gaming part has become very important for TV manufacturers. Philips hopes to seduce gamers, including the most demanding, by offering technologies to optimize the images produced by the latest game consoles as well as gaming PCs.

For players, the delay time at the display is important. On the Philips 65OLED937 TV, we measured a display delay time of 20.5ms, like last year’s Philips 55OLED936, which corresponds to less than two frames of delay between when the player presses the button on the controller and the action takes place on the screen. This is a good result, but surprisingly slower than the one we had on the OLED806 and OLED807 series, which is 14.5 ms under the same conditions.

This latency is also higher than on the latest Panasonic LZ2000 OLED models (9.3ms) and on Samsung S95B TVs or the latest LG C1, G1, C2 and G2 series, for example which go down to 9.5ms. Do not panic despite everything, the TV offers a very good responsiveness that will suit the vast majority of players.

AUDIO: THANKS TO THE SOUNDBAR

The audio part of the Philips 55OLED937 TV is therefore based on a Bowers & Wilkins soundbar. While last year’s model, OLED936 offered a 3.1.2 channel system. Here we are entitled to a 5.1.2 channel system with two additional channels at the front, an integrated subwoofer and two elevation speakers to exploit the Dolby Atmos audio format with which the TV is compatible. It also supports Dolby Digital and DTS audio formats. Remember that we can count on the integrated DTS Play-Fi technology that allows you to use the TV as a connected speaker (with or without an image) that can be grouped with other DTS Play-Fi devices in the house.

The soundbar is equipped with two 10-watt speakers each, two 12.5-watt surround speakers each, a 5-watt tweeter-on-top, a 20-watt woofer and two 12.5-watt speakers each for ceiling effects. The whole offers a power of about 95 watts, against 70 watts previously. There is always a rather effective vent at the back to bring more warmth to the whole.

INTERFACE: ANDROID TV WITH ITS PHILIPS APPLICATIONS AND MENUS

Like the other TVs of the brand, the OLED937 series takes advantage of the Android TV system (version 11) and the possibility of installing many applications. The main page that acts as the home menu offers suggestions based on the programs watched. One can take advantage of the most popular platforms.

THE BACKLIT AND VERY LARGE REMOTE CONTROL

The remote control that comes with the Philips 65OLED937 TV is strictly identical to the one offered with the OLED936 series. It is powered by two AAA batteries. It is very large, like those of the Panasonic, but much lighter than their Japanese counterparts. It offers beveled edges. Bluetooth, it incorporates a microphone to pick up voice commands. It has a backlight system, which is appreciable. This is triggered by tilting the remote control 90 degrees or after pressing one of the keys.

Several streaming platforms are directly accessible, including Prime Video, Netflix, Rakuten TV and Philips TV Channels. The keys are very pleasant, because very flexible. Despite this, we still find that they are a little too close to each other, which can make it tricky to use them blindly.

HIGH CONSUMPTION

For power consumption, we measured what the TV consumed during the broadcast of a series, “The 100” on Netflix (HD 5.1) for 4 hours with the sound and image settings set to Home Theater mode. Under these conditions, reproduced for all TV tests, the Philips 65OLED937 consumed 78 Wh (Ambilight disabled) which is higher than the 54 Wh requested by the LG G2 65 inches for the same program. With the Ambilight system activated, under the same conditions, count on an additional consumption of about 6 Wh.

For the HDR (Dolby Vision Dark Specifically) series The Black Mirror on Netflix, we got an average consumption of 92 Wh. The standby consumption is 0.5 Watts unless you leave the network mode activated in the settings, the TV is ready to obey your voice commands and then consumes 2 Watts.
