Entirely black except for its hinge, the product still benefits on the keyboard from a bright red backlight that brings it back to its condition of PC dedicated (in part) to video games. However, everything remains quite discreet and rather pleasing to the eye.
The input area is generally successful. The keyboard, in particular, is very comfortable to use: the keys are wide and well spaced between them, the stroke is quite long and the typing sensation is very good. It will be possible to type a long text without problem and avoid typos. The touchpad, on the other hand, leaves us with a more mixed impression. Properly integrated, it turns out to be a little “soft”; Click and double click do not always respond very well. We will tend to favor here the use of a mouse.
On the connectivity side, the Acer Nitro 5 is particularly well off. There is a USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, an HDMI output, a Gigabit Ethernet port, an SD card reader and a combo jack. In short, everything you expect from a PC of this type.
Let’s finish this “Ergonomics” part by talking about heat and noise management. Equipped with a GeForce GTX graphics card, the Nitro 5 necessarily rises quite quickly in temperature, which causes ventilation to be activated. However, it remains a good student in its category, because the heat does not exceed 44.5 ° C at the front and 47 ° C under the chassis and everything is also quite well distributed. As for the noise, after an hour of benchmarking in Metro: Last Light, it does not exceed 43 dB. A very correct figure for a PC in this category. In play, we can clearly hear the blast of the ventilation, but we remain at an acceptable sound level, especially since the noise released remains quite deaf and not disturbing to the ear.
Screen
Laptop “gaming” requires, the Acer Nitro 5 is equipped with a matte IPS panel of 15.6 inches (39.6 cm), displaying a Full HD definition (1,920 x 1,080 px). The refresh rate is stuck at 60Hz and there is no G-Sync compatibility. Two regrettable shortcomings for a notebook with an Nvidia GPU.

This screen is probably the most disappointing aspect of the product. Without being catastrophic, it remains penalized by a fairly low maximum brightness (270 cd / m²), a contrast ratio a little fair of 900: 1 and a delta E too high (5.7).
The colorimetric balance is thus half-toned. The colour temperature, at 6,850 K, is excellent, as it is very close to the standard at 6,500 K, which ensures balanced between warm and cold shades. On the autonomy side, again, we are in a high average for this category of product. Our Netflix playback test (Chrome, brightness at 200 cd/m², headphones plugged in and backlight off) ran for 5 hours 03. A good score (again for this type of PC), and the guarantee of a good half day of work without having to connect the charger. In the game, it is of course another story: it is difficult to exceed 1 hour 30 on a greedy title.
Audio
The Acer Nitro 5 is a good student on the audio side, with however a quality gap between the headphone jack and the speakers, which is not really a surprise on this type of product.
Autonomy
The speakers focus as often on the mids and high mids, largely abandoning the bass and treble. The rendering saturates a little at full volume, but the voices remain well intelligible.
The jack output (below) on the other hand is particularly good, with a very low distortion rate (0.008%), but an output power that we would have liked slightly higher (125 mVrms). The entire sound spectrum is however very situated, with a good stereo effect.
